DESCRIPTION:Count the Bobolinks and More! \n\nJoin Birding for Pleasure in Durham & Middlefield with the Hartford Audubon Society for a bird walk at Frederick White Farm – an important habitat for Bobolinks.  \nDate: Saturday June 13\, 2026 \nTime: 9 AM – to about 11 AM \nLocation: Meet at Frederick White Farm open space\,  \n70 Maple Ave\, Durham\, CT \nPark on side of dirt road down the hill. \nYouth must be accompanied by parent or responsible adult. \nThe Bobolink is a migratory songbird who travels all the way from South America to nest in the grasses at this town-owned farm. During this walk we will observe and count the Bobolink and other grassland species as we explore the farm fields.   \nPeter Picone will lead this walk. He is a Connecticut DEEP Wildlife Division habitat biologist and received the 2025 Tom ODell Outstanding District Service Award from the Connecticut River Coastal Conservation District. The Award recognizes Pete’s contributions to the Connecticut Envirothon and for his efforts to enhance habitat for wildlife through outreach and education about native plants and invasive plant management. \nRun completely by volunteers\, Birding for Pleasure’s goal is to engage communities in conversation\, restoration and enjoyment of grasslands focusing on birds\, wildlife and their habitats.  \n\n\n\n\n\n\nPlease bring your binoculars\, drinking water\, bug repellent and wear waterproof shoes or boots. The walk around the farm is mostly flat and may be wet. It may be muddy.\nNo dogs. \n\n\n\n\n\n\nVortex binoculars are available through a CVEF grant for check-out at the Durham and Middlefield Public Libraries during their regular business hours.  \nA few binoculars may be borrowed during our walk \nHeavy rain or lightening cancels.  \nRain-date is Wednesday June 17\, 2026 led by Debbie Evans. \n**Reservations are suggested. DESCRIPTION:Sunday\, June 14\, 2026\n10:00am – 12:00pm  \nJoin us at Deer Pond Farm for a program on Pileated Woodpeckers\, and other forest birds\, sharing the same habitat. Lori Lichtenauer Sanctuary Manager / Naturalist will share unique adaptations of the Pileated Woodpeckers to survive and thrive year-round in the forests of the northeast. You will learn how Pileateds excavate holes in trees for nesting and to find wood boring insects to eat. Pileated woodpeckers are some of the only birds capable of creating large cavities for nesting\, roosting\, and shelter in bad weather for a variety of bird species. Non-migratory birds like tufted titmice\, house wrens\, chickadees and more use old Pileated cavities as their nest sites. Learn about the ways the forest community benefits from the industrious nature of the Pileated. The program will start in our classroom\, then we’ll be on the wooded trails around our main campus birding. All birding levels welcome. DESCRIPTION:Bring binoculars and join us for a casual walk around Greenwich Point Park\, Old Greenwich\, CT\, in search of wild birds in diverse habitats.  Held year-round on the first Sunday of every month at Greenwich Point Park\, the walk begins at 9:00 am near the southern concession stand near the flagpole on the main beach. The walk lasts from 2 – 3 hours\, but participants can leave at any time. SUMMARY:New Haven Bird Club: People's State Forest Field Trip
DESCRIPTION:Field Trip – Peoples State Forest\, Barkhamsted – Paul Mahler and Michele McDermott \n\nJuly 19\, 2026 @ 7:30 am – 11:30 am\n\n\n\nPeoples State Forest spans over 3\,000 acres of diverse habitats and features 14 miles of trails\, yet it has been infrequently birded over the years. Join us as we explore various hotspots within the forest. Species we’re likely to encounter include: Blackburnian\, Canada\, Black-throated Blue\, and Black-throated Green Warblers\, Northern Waterthrush\, Ovenbirds\, Red-breasted Nuthatches\, Scarlet Tanagers\, Least and Alder Flycatchers\, Winter Wrens\, and more. Great Horned and Barred Owls\, along with Broad-winged Hawks\, also nest within the forest. Please note: the forest can be quite buggy in summer. Mosquito nets and/or generous use of bug spray are highly recommended. We will drive to several locations and walk approximately 2–3 miles throughout the morning. Terrain will include boardwalks\, rocky access roads\, and forest trails with many stumps and roots — please plan footwear and mobility accordingly. \nMeet at Matthies Grove (106 East River Road\, Barkhamsted). Meet in front of the pavilion to the left of the entrance.
