SUMMARY:CT Audubon\, RTP Estuary Center: Where Are the Birds and How Do We Protect Them Lecture
DESCRIPTION:CT River Lecture Series – \n \nWhere are the Birds and How Do We Protect Them: \n \nResults from the CT Bird Atlas\, with Chris Elphick\n\n\n\nThe CT Bird Atlas is a project to map all species of birds that occur in the state of Connecticut. Connecticut conducted its first atlas from 1982-86\, with the results published in 1994 as the Atlas of Breeding Birds of Connecticut by Louis Bevier. Field work for the second atlas took place between April 2018 and February 2022\, and involved nearly a thousand volunteer birders\, who submitted more than 600\,000 bird observations. This talk will provide an overview of the results of the CT Bird Atlas\, an overview of the Birds of Connecticut web site\, and a discussion of the conservation implications of the project. \nChris Elphick is a professor of conservation biology in the Department of Ecology and Evolutionary Biology at the University of Connecticut. DESCRIPTION:Join Jerry and Co. for a Fall Migration Bird Walk at Hammonasset Beach State Park here in Madison. Migrating hawks\, eagles\, owls\, shorebirds\, waterbirds\, and songbirds can all be seen at one of Connecticut’s premier birding “hot spots”. \nBirds migrating south are sometimes pushed by westerly winds towards the shore\, so they hug the coastline. Birds of prey (hawks\, falcons and eagles) can often be spotted soaring overhead or hunting along their routes. Several songbirds exchange bright spring feathers for more drab non-breeding colors\, and Jerry will help you identify these sometimes confusing differences. Shorebirds\, which have started their southerly migration after finishing nesting in August\, can often be seen in the various wet areas. \nImprove your ear as we listen for birds before we see them. Get to know which birds are likely streaming through and why. Learn about habitats in this exceptional state park. \nAlways a surprise and always entertaining\, birding on the shore of CT is one of the highlights of fall. Get outdoors and enjoy a Saturday morning in the fresh air on one of our Fall Migration Bird Walks at Hammonasset! \n\nWalks at Hammonasset will be held each Saturday Sept. 12 through Nov. 21\, 2026\nParticipants will meet Jerry at The Audubon Shop parking lot at 7:50 am\, carpool to the park at 8 and return at about 10:30.\n$6.00 cash charge per person – pay when you arrive\, please.\nBeginners are welcome.\nNo need to pre-register.\nEach guided walk takes place from 8-10:30 am.\nBinoculars are necessary and may be rented for $4\, please call to rent.\nTelescopes and cameras are welcome.\nDress for the weather. DESCRIPTION:Hartford Crow Roost – Saturday\, December 5 @ 4:00 pm – 6:00 pm\n\n\nMeet at Hartford Housing Authority parking lot at 180 John D.\nWardlaw Way (a.k.a. Overlook Terrace)\, Hartford. DIRECTIONS:\nFrom Flatbush Ave.\, turn south onto Newfield Ave.\, go past Charter\nOak Marketplace shopping plaza\, and then turn east at the stoplight\nintersection of Newfield & John D. Wardlaw Way\, and park in the lot\nnext to the building at the end of the street. \nWatching thousands of crows return to their nightly roost is an exciting\nwinter spectacle. The roost tends to be near the Hartford/West\nHartford boundary\, often within sight of I-84. \nI’ll be tracking the roost location and will update the meeting place using the AllHAS e-mail if the crows have moved to a new area. Be prepared to drive around some after we meet to see crows flying in from different directions. \nDress quite warmly (including hats\, gloves\, and warm footwear): we\nwill often be standing still. DESCRIPTION:Bring binoculars and join us for a casual walk around Greenwich Point Park\, Old Greenwich\, CT\, in search of wild birds in diverse habitats.  Held year-round on the first Sunday of every month at Greenwich Point Park\, the walk begins at 9:00 am near the southern concession stand near the flagpole on the main beach. The walk lasts from 2 – 3 hours\, but participants can leave at any time. DESCRIPTION:Indoor Meeting – Still Counting After All These Years: The History of the New Haven Christmas Bird Count – Steve Broker\n\nThursday\, December 10\, 2026 @ 7:00 pm – 9:00 pm\n\n\n\nIn 1900\, ornithologist and Bird-Lore editor Frank Chapman called for “a Christmas bird-census” to counter the ongoing slaughter of millions of North American birds. Two pioneer counts were held in Connecticut\, and in 1901 Aretas A. Saunders held New Haven’s first Christmas Bird Count (CBC) in Edgewood Park. The CBC\, sponsored by National Audubon Society\, has matured over the past 126 years into an invaluable conservation effort in citizen science. The NHBC has provided the leadership for the New Haven CBC for many years. In this historical retrospective\, richly illustrated with photos of birds and birders\, we discuss our changing early winter bird populations over the past century and a quarter. \nSteve Broker\, a past president of the NHBC and the Connecticut Ornithological Association\, has served as compiler or co-compiler of the New Haven CBC for 17 years and has compiled and summarized the Connecticut statewide CBC for 40 years.
