SUMMARY:The Audubon Shop: Fall Migration Bird Walk @ Hammonasset
DESCRIPTION:Join Jerry and Co. for a Fall Migration Bird Walk at Hammonasset Beach State Park here in Madison. Migrating hawks\, eagles\, owls\, shorebirds\, waterbirds\, and songbirds can all be seen at one of Connecticut’s premier birding “hot spots”. \nBirds migrating south are sometimes pushed by westerly winds towards the shore\, so they hug the coastline. Birds of prey (hawks\, falcons and eagles) can often be spotted soaring overhead or hunting along their routes. Several songbirds exchange bright spring feathers for more drab non-breeding colors\, and Jerry will help you identify these sometimes confusing differences. Shorebirds\, which have started their southerly migration after finishing nesting in August\, can often be seen in the various wet areas. \nImprove your ear as we listen for birds before we see them. Get to know which birds are likely streaming through and why. Learn about habitats in this exceptional state park. \nAlways a surprise and always entertaining\, birding on the shore of CT is one of the highlights of fall. Get outdoors and enjoy a Saturday morning in the fresh air on one of our Fall Migration Bird Walks at Hammonasset! \n\nWalks at Hammonasset will be held each Saturday Sept. 12 through Nov. 21\, 2026\nParticipants will meet Jerry at The Audubon Shop parking lot at 7:50 am\, carpool to the park at 8 and return at about 10:30.\n$6.00 cash charge per person – pay when you arrive\, please.\nBeginners are welcome.\nNo need to pre-register.\nEach guided walk takes place from 8-10:30 am.\nBinoculars are necessary and may be rented for $4\, please call to rent.\nTelescopes and cameras are welcome.\nDress for the weather. Pouring rain will cancel.\nCall the shop on any Friday to double check weather\, if needed. 203-245-9056 \n\n

SUMMARY:New Haven Bird Club - Hammonasset Field Trip: November 7\, 2026
DESCRIPTION:Field Trip – Hammonasset Beach State Park\, Madison – Corrie Folsom O’Keefe\n\nSaturday\, November 7\, 2026 @ 8:00 am – 11:00 am\n\n\n\nJoin Corrie Folsom-O’Keefe\, Director of Bird Conservation for the CT Office of the National Audubon Society\, for a walk at Hammonasset Beach State Park\, one of CT’s most productive birding destinations at all seasons of the year. We’ll look for shorebirds\, waterfowl\, raptors\, late migrants\, and other over-wintering birds. The park’s varied habitats include over 400 acres of salt marsh\, which have eroded substantially in recent years\, reducing the amount of habitat available for beach nesting (Piping Plover\, Least Tern) and salt marsh birds (Saltmarsh Sparrow\, Seaside Sparrow\, Willet\, Clapper Rail). Corrie will discuss the birds that use Hammonasset for nesting\, stopover\, or wintering\, and describe efforts to prevent future erosion and increase the resilience of the Park’s natural resources. \nMeet at the Meigs Point Nature Center. \nLeader: Corrie Folsom O’Keefe 203-233-0535\, cfolsom-okeefe@audubon.org

SUMMARY:Greenwich Audubon: Quaker Ridge Hawk Watch
DESCRIPTION:Quaker Ridge Hawk Watch at Greenwich Audubon Center is a premier location in Connecticut for observing migrating raptors and a wide variety of songbirds. The watch runs daily from 9 am to 5 pm. Stop by anytime.  \nSince 1971\, migrating hawks have been counted by volunteers as they pass over Quaker Ridge Hawk Watch. In 1985\, the Audubon Society of Greenwich hired a full-time watcher for the site. Now\, the Greenwich Audubon Center hires a paid hawk watcher for the site every year. \nThe significant number of migrating raptors that are observed here each year is one of the key reasons why the Greenwich Audubon Center Main Sanctuary is designated an Important Bird Area.

DESCRIPTION:CT River Lecture Series – \n \nWhere are the Birds and How Do We Protect Them: \n \nResults from the CT Bird Atlas\, with Chris Elphick\n\n\n\nThe CT Bird Atlas is a project to map all species of birds that occur in the state of Connecticut. Connecticut conducted its first atlas from 1982-86\, with the results published in 1994 as the Atlas of Breeding Birds of Connecticut by Louis Bevier. Field work for the second atlas took place between April 2018 and February 2022\, and involved nearly a thousand volunteer birders\, who submitted more than 600\,000 bird observations. This talk will provide an overview of the results of the CT Bird Atlas\, an overview of the Birds of Connecticut web site\, and a discussion of the conservation implications of the project. \nChris Elphick is a professor of conservation biology in the Department of Ecology and Evolutionary Biology at the University of Connecticut. His research centers around describing\, understanding\, and mitigating biodiversity loss. He is also one of the lead investigators for the Connecticut Bird Atlas. \n\n\n\nWednesday\, November 18\, 2026\n5:00pm – 6:00pm\nOld Lyme Town Hall\n52 Lyme St.\nOld Lyme\, CT\nProgram is free; registration required\n\nRegister here: CT River Lecture Series – Where are the Birds and How Do We Protect Them: Results from the CT Bird Atlas\, with Chris Elphick | Nov 18\, 5:00pm – 6:00pm | RTP Estuary Center | The Connecticut Audubon Society

SUMMARY:Menunkatuck Audubon - How Birds Created the Earth and more stories: November 18\, 2026
DESCRIPTION:How Birds Created the Earth … and other stories from The Complete Language of Birds\n\nWednesday\, November 18\, 2026\n7:00 PM 8:00 PM\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nAncient Egyptians believed that the Earth began as an egg laid by a giant goose. Ojibwa people of America’s northern plains tell of a Great Flood that swept away the world’s evils\, and the bird that braved the deep waters to bring a bit of soil up from the bottom to restart the continent. European scientists once believed that geese survived the winters by turning themselves into barnacles and adhering to the bottoms of ships\, transforming back into birds in spring\n\nThese and many other tales told in Randi Minetor’s latest book\, The Complete Language of Birds\, bring us back to a time when birds seemed like magical beings with the answers to so many of the world’s questions.\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nBestselling author Randi Minetor writes the Birdfinding and Best Easy Bird Guides series for Falcon Guides/Globe Pequot Press and is the author of Backyard Birding and Butterfly Gardening for Lyons Press. Her most recent book\, The Complete Language of Birds\, is an encyclopedia that unites classic illustrations\, science\, folklore\, and mythology about more than 400 bird species around the world. She writes for Birding Magazine and North American Birds and serves as president of the Rochester Birding Association in upstate New York.\n\nRegister to get Zoom link.

In this four-part series\, participants will learn about ways to improve backyard habitats throughout different seasons. Each program will focus on the seasonal needs of birds and specific ways to support them\, using examples from the sanctuary grounds of the RTP Estuary Center in Old Lyme. Each session will include an indoor presentation and an outdoor exploration of the sanctuary grounds and gardens\, accompanied by handouts that list the plants mentioned for each session. \nWinter can be a challenging time for birds\, with limited food and water resources combined with cold and stormy conditions. A well-planned backyard can be a lifesaver for wintering birds. SUMMARY:Hartford Audubon - Crow Roost Field Trip: December 5\, 2026
DESCRIPTION:Hartford Crow Roost – Saturday\, December 5 @ 4:00 pm – 6:00 pm\n\n\nMeet at Hartford Housing Authority parking lot at 180 John D.\nWardlaw Way (a.k.a. Overlook Terrace)\, Hartford. DIRECTIONS:\nFrom Flatbush Ave.\, turn south onto Newfield Ave.\, go past Charter\nOak Marketplace shopping plaza\, and then turn east at the stoplight\nintersection of Newfield & John D. Wardlaw Way\, and park in the lot\nnext to the building at the end of the street. \nWatching thousands of crows return to their nightly roost is an exciting\nwinter spectacle. The roost tends to be near the Hartford/West\nHartford boundary\, often within sight of I-84. \nI’ll be tracking the roost location and will update the meeting place using the AllHAS e-mail if the crows have moved to a new area. Be prepared to drive around some after we meet to see crows flying in from different directions. \nDress quite warmly (including hats\, gloves\, and warm footwear): we\nwill often be standing still. The crow show will probably last a little over an hour. \nTrip will be cancelled or rescheduled if snow or rain is falling or the weather is otherwise dangerous; call to ask if the weather seems borderline. \nSylvia Halkin – halkin@ccsu.edu – 860-985-7343 T
