SUMMARY:Hartford Audubon Society: Big January - All month
DESCRIPTION:Big January All MonthAll of Hartford County\n \n\n\nIt’s that time of year!  The Hartford Audubon Society (HAS) is pleased to announce our ninth annual Hartford County Big January of Birding birdwatching challenge. The goal of the activity is to encourage folks to get outside during the month of January and see as many species of wild birds in Hartford County as possible. The challenge is free to people of all ages and is not intended to be competitive — please share your findings and encourage new birders.\n\n And this year\, the CT Ornithological Association is running an all-CT Big January\, so you can do both ours in Hartford County AND the statewide challenge too!\n\nTo participate in both challenges\, birders should enter their daily or periodic observations into ebird.org\, the free birdwatching site maintained by the Cornell University Lab of Ornithology.  If you don’t use eBird\, you can list your species\, date seen\, location\, and brief description\, and send it via email or mail directly to me right at the end of January. It must be received by Wednesday\, February 4th.  You do not need to be a HAS member or reside in Hartford County to enter. At the end of the month\, Hartford Audubon will retrieve all the data and award certificates and prizes. There are four categories:\n\nYouth (ages 4-10) who must see at least 25 species to enter\nTeen (ages 11-17) who must see at least 35 species to enter\nWeekend Warrior (adults ages 18 and up who can’t get outdoors during the week) who must see at least 50 species to enter\nAdults (ages 18 and up who can get outdoors during the week) who must see at least 60 species to enter.\n\nAll entries that meet the minimum number of species for each challenge group will receive a certificate of achievement.  A special prize will be awarded for the highest species count for each challenge group\, and the coveted “Golden Grebe” award will be given to the birder finding the most unusual bird.\n\nJanuary\, 2026 may be a very interesting month and a joyful way to enter the new year. There are some rarities showing up this week – I hope they will stay until after January 1st!  I’ve never seen a barnacle goose in Connecticut!\n\nWishing everyone a healthy and birdy 2026\,\n\nSarah Faulkner\n\n\n\n\n\n Add to calendar\n\n\n\n\nSarah Faulkner sffaulkner@comcast.net 860–543–1280 T

SUMMARY:COA: Big January
DESCRIPTION:COA returns to the traditional format of a friendly competition based on the total number of species seen during the month of January 2026 within a specific area within our state. With a variety of categories\, there is something for everyone from big listers to local birders. it’s a fun excuse to get out and explore in the midst of New England’s stick season.  \nProper birding ethics are required. Let’s remember to help each other and the birds. Winter is a tough time for birds\, so let’s try to keep our distance and let them do their thing.  \n\n\n\n2026 Categories:\nThe Winner in each of the following categories will win a prize and receive a Commemorative Certificate:\n\nIndividual Birder with Highest Count Observed across Connecticut\nIndividual Birder with Highest Count Observed per Connecticut county\nIndividual with Highest Single Location Count (Requires Manual Reporting)\n\nReceive a Commemorative Certificate from the COA for the following:\n\nIndividuals who Observe* 100 Species or More\nYouth (ages 4-10) with 25 species or more\nTeen (ages 11-17) with 35 species or more\n\n*Observed birds include both seen and heard only species \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nHow to Participate:\n\n Species that qualify are those species that currently are accepted to the state list or are observations of birds during January that would represent first state records for Connecticut. Let’s hope we have some of those! The current list of species accepted for the state of Connecticut can be found here. . \nFor more details\, check out the BIG JANUARY event page.

SUMMARY:New London: Christmas Bird Count
DESCRIPTION:Frank Chapman and 26 other conservationists initiated the Christmas Bird Count (CBC) as a way of promoting conservation by counting\, rather than hunting\, birds on Christmas Day of 1900. Some counts have been running every year since then and the CBC now happens in over 20 countries in the western hemisphere!  Now a long-standing program of the National Audubon Society\, with over 120 years of community science involvement\, it is an early-winter bird census\, where thousands of volunteers across the U.S.\, Canada (where Audubon partners with Birds Canada)\, and many countries in the Western Hemisphere go out over a 24-hour period on one calendar day to count birds.  All Christmas Bird Counts are conducted between December 14 to January 5.  Each count circle has a complier who coordinates the teams in the field and gathers all of the data to submit to NAS. \nContact the compiler for more information: \n*New London\, CT (CTNL) Compiler:  Lisa Wahle lcwahle@gmail.com

He has a Master’s Degree in biology and studied under famed ornithologist Dr. Noble Proctor.  Chris is retired after a career as a state government executive\, a land conservation and management planner with The Nature Conservancy\, a municipal planner\, and a private land use consultant.  He is a past president of the Connecticut Ornithological Association\, a founding member of the Western Connecticut Bird Club\, and he served as chair of the first Connecticut Breeding Bird Atlas steering committee.  Chris now spends much of his time photographing birds and nature\, traveling to the neotropics and southwest US to see and photograph as many different hummingbirds as possible\, and helping maintain their yard and gardens in Woodbury Connecticut.  Chris’s photography can be sampled here: CSWood PhotoSampler\n\n\n\nDescription:  The natural phenomenon of bird migration is easily observed and studied in Connecticut due to the state’s location\, geography\, and habitat diversity.  Wood will present an overview of bird migration\, with particular consideration of where Connecticut fits into the big picture of bird conservation and the enjoyment of the hobby of birding.  With a state list of over 450 birds\, many of which are migrants through the state\, Connecticut birders have the opportunity to see well over one quarter of all the bird species found in the United States.  Sustaining necessary habitats for breeding birds and migrants in our highly developed state is an important goal for land conservation efforts and this presentation discusses efforts and strategies to attain that goal.\n\nFree and open to the public.\n\nContact:  Angela Dimmitt – angeladimmitt@aol.com

SUMMARY:Audubon CT Greenwich: Feeder Watch Fridays
DESCRIPTION:The winter months are the perfect time to become acquainted with our resident songbirds. Come join us for this recurring program on Friday afternoons where Audubon Naturalist Ryan MacLean will point out the species of birds coming to our Learning Center’s bird feeder station and provide tips on both identifying and feeding them. \nWe’ll also share how to participate in Project FeederWatch—a winter-long community science survey of the birds that visit feeders in your backyards\, parks\, offices\, and other areas. You and your family can participate by counting the birds you see in your backyard and submitting them to the Project FeederWatch website. We will provide identification guides to backyard birds and information on how you can take part in Project FeederWatch and even submit a checklist of our own at the end of the program! \nAll ages are welcome including children after school and senior citizens. Our building is ADA accessible so wheelchairs and mobility devices can be used. \nThis IN-PERSON program has a limited capacity and will be held indoors. \nRegistration is FREE but tickets MUST be purchased in advance through this online ticket sales page. \nPlease register for the quantity of ALL members in your party. The rate for children and adults is the same. \nUpon arrival please check in at the front desk and proceed to our Learning Center bird feeder window. \nFor questions\, please contact Ryan MacLean at Ryan.MacLean@audubon.org or 203-930-1353
