SUMMARY:Audubon CT Greenwich: Feeder Watch Fridays
DESCRIPTION:The winter months are the perfect time to become acquainted with our resident songbirds. Come join us for this recurring program on Friday afternoons where Audubon Naturalist Ryan MacLean will point out the species of birds coming to our Learning Center’s bird feeder station and provide tips on both identifying and feeding them. \nWe’ll also share how to participate in Project FeederWatch—a winter-long community science survey of the birds that visit feeders in your backyards\, parks\, offices\, and other areas. You and your family can participate by counting the birds you see in your backyard and submitting them to the Project FeederWatch website. We will provide identification guides to backyard birds and information on how you can take part in Project FeederWatch and even submit a checklist of our own at the end of the program! \nAll ages are welcome including children after school and senior citizens. Our building is ADA accessible so wheelchairs and mobility devices can be used. \nThis IN-PERSON program has a limited capacity and will be held indoors. \nRegistration is FREE but tickets MUST be purchased in advance through this online ticket sales page. \nPlease register for the quantity of ALL members in your party. DESCRIPTION:Branford Land Trust:\n WINTER SPEAKER SERIES The Mission of Preserving Our Wildlife with Christine Cummings\, A Place Called Hope\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n \nJoin the Branford Land Trust on Tuesday\, January 28 at 6:30 p.m. in the auditorium at the Blackstone Memorial Library for “The Mission of Preserving Our Wildlife” with Christine Cummings\, A Place Called Hope.\n \nChristine will speak on the mission of A Place Called Hope\, with an emphasis on birds of prey. She will introduce and be joined by two species\, a hawk and an owl\, offering us the chance to connect intimately with these incredible birds. Since 98% of the conflicts these animals face have to do with us humans\, Christine will offer simple tips or ways that we can all better coexist with the wildlife within our own backyards.\n \nChristine has a background working with animals and devoted her adult life to Wildlife Rehabilitation since 2005. In 2007\, APCH was founded\, with the mission of preserving wildlife for the future. As a State and Federally licensed Bird of Prey Wildlife Rehabilitator\, Christine admits on average 500-600 patients per year. Her daily routine consists of catering to the needs of injured\, orphaned\, or sick birds of prey\, as well as the 40 resident ambassador birds who call A PLACE CALLED HOPE home. Raising awareness about these incredible birds and the common conflicts they face living so closely to us humans is her educational goal. In the Fall\, thousands leave their northern breeding grounds in southern Canada and the northern United States and move south to find food and cover. Often called a migrant\, it is more appropriate to refer to them as a “nomad” or a fall “passage bird\,” since they never end up in the same place twice. Despite the fact that they have been studied extensively\, much of their life history remains a mystery.  Former WCBC President and Federally licensed raptor bander\, Larry Fischer will unravel some of the mystery surrounding the life history of the Northern Saw-whet Owl\, drawing from his extensive experience with this small owl\, illustrated with his amazing photographs of the birds in all ages.\n \nLarry has been banding and watching hawks and owls for more than 40 years.  He is a State and Federally licensed bird bander with an emphasis on birds of prey.  He is currently the Connecticut collaborator on broad-winged hawk research with Hawk Mountain Sanctuary Association in Kempton\, PA\, and also serves as a member of the Board of Directors of the NorthEast Hawk Watch.\n\n\nFree and open to the public.\n \nContact:  Angela Dimmitt – 860-355-3429

Come join us for this recurring program on Friday afternoons where Audubon Naturalist Ryan MacLean will point out the species of birds coming to our Learning Center’s bird feeder station and provide tips on both identifying and feeding them. \nWe’ll also share how to participate in Project FeederWatch—a winter-long community science survey of the birds that visit feeders in your backyards\, parks\, offices\, and other areas. You and your family can participate by counting the birds you see in your backyard and submitting them to the Project FeederWatch website. We will provide identification guides to backyard birds and information on how you can take part in Project FeederWatch and even submit a checklist of our own at the end of the program! \nAll ages are welcome including children after school and senior citizens. SUMMARY:Audubon CT Greenwich: Great Backyard Bird Count at Grass Island Park
DESCRIPTION:Join Audubon Naturalists as we count waterbirds and land birds in Greenwich Harbor as part of the Cornell Lab of Ornithology’s annual Great Backyard Bird Count. Ducks\, geese\, loons\, and gulls are some of the birds that we expect to see as they spend the winter on Long Island Sound. You will also get to help submit our findings to the bird count website and learn how you can submit your backyard counts too! \nThis IN-PERSON program has a limited capacity of 30 participants and will be held entirely outdoors. \nRestrooms will not be available so please plan accordingly. \nTickets MUST be purchased in advance through our online ticket sales page. There will be no ticket sales at the door the day of the program. Please be prepared to show proof of your ticket registration\, either as a printed copy of your registration receipt or your registration confirmation email on your phone. \n– Program is free of charge but suggested donations are encouraged to support Audubon’s bird conservation efforts. SUMMARY:Audubon CT Greenwich: Feeder Watch Fridays
DESCRIPTION:The winter months are the perfect time to become acquainted with our resident songbirds. Come join us for this recurring program on Friday afternoons where Audubon Naturalist Ryan MacLean will point out the species of birds coming to our Learning Center’s bird feeder station and provide tips on both identifying and feeding them. \nWe’ll also share how to participate in Project FeederWatch—a winter-long community science survey of the birds that visit feeders in your backyards\, parks\, offices\, and other areas. You and your family can participate by counting the birds you see in your backyard and submitting them to the Project FeederWatch website. We will provide identification guides to backyard birds and information on how you can take part in Project FeederWatch and even submit a checklist of our own at the end of the program! \nAll ages are welcome including children after school and senior citizens. Our building is ADA accessible so wheelchairs and mobility devices can be used. \nThis IN-PERSON program has a limited capacity and will be held indoors. \nRegistration is FREE but tickets MUST be purchased in advance through this online ticket sales page. \nPlease register for the quantity of ALL members in your party. DESCRIPTION:Audubon Shop:\nEagle Watch on the Ct River:\n \n\n\n\n\n\n\nJoin us for an Winter Eagle Watch on the CT River\, and get outside to see the wonders right here in our own backyard! –\n \nFebruary 14 @ 8:00 am – 1:00 pm\nFebruary 21 @ 8:00 am – 1:00 pm\n \nWinter’s cold brings dozens of Bald Eagles down the Connecticut River from Canada in search of ice – free fishing. In recent years\, over 50 eagles have wintered on the lower Connecticut River. Their 6 – 8 foot wing span make the Bald Eagle the largest predator in North America.\n \nLeader Jerry Connolly of The Audubon Shop will help participants spot eagles from a variety of locations on the river\, and will discuss the bird’s natural history on this land – based trip. We’ll also spot ducks\, birds of prey\, songbirds and whatever else comes into view.\n \nThe Bald Eagle’s recovery in our state (since there were none occurring in CT in the 1950’s) is considered a major environmental victory. It is now estimated that up to 100 eagles winter in Connecticut\, from December to early March\, along major rivers and at large reservoirs. The number of wintering eagles has been increasing slowly\, and depends on the severity of each winter.\n \nThe natural year-round habitat of bald eagles is near lakes\, marshes\, rivers\, or seacoasts\, where there are tall trees nearby for nesting and roosting and fish for eating. Bald Eagles feed primarily on fish\, but they also are opportunistic predators and scavengers that will eat anything that can be caught easily or scavenged\, such as waterfowl\, small and large mammals\, and livestock carrion. In addition\, they have a reputation of being thieves\, and can be seen robbing other raptors or gulls of their catch.\n \nA ticket makes a great gift!\n \nThere is little to no hiking on this tour. We simply drive from spot to spot\, park\, and walk down to the river. SUMMARY:Menunkatuck Audubon: Eagle Watch at Shepaug Dam
DESCRIPTION:The Shepaug Dam Bald Eagle Observation Area has provided visitors with views of wintering Bald Eagles for 30 years. The Shepaug Hydroelectric Station keeps the water below the dam to be ice-free in winter and the churning water brings fish close to the surface making it a place that Bald Eagles are able to find food in the coldest of winter. \nWe will be at the observation area for about an hour. There are no facilities besides porta-potties. Dress warmly in layers. Bring lunch\, binoculars\, and cameras. \nThe drive time between Shepaug Dam and the Menunkatuck chapter towns is between 45 and 75 minutes. \nSpace is limited to 20 participants so reservations are required.
