SUMMARY:Sharon Audubon Center: Homeowner Series: Backyards that Support Birds
DESCRIPTION:Saturday\, May 30th – 10am-12pm \n\nJoin us in this exciting new three-part series where we explore how homeowners can manage their land for the betterment of birds. We’ll be diving into backyards\, fields\, and forests and discussing management opportunities for each of these unique ecosystems. If you own land and have one or more of them on your property\, you won’t want to miss this! Each program will be hosted at a private residence in the Sharon area\, so please look carefully at the address for each. \nOur backyard environments present a growing opportunity for bird habitat as much of their natural habitat is fragmented or altered in some way. Whether we’re striving to eliminate lawn grass\, install native plant gardens\, or swap non-native trees (think Norway Maple) for native ones\, there are numerous opportunities we can seize\, big and small\, that can have a positive impact on our native wildlife and begin to restore our local biodiversity.  Join Sharon Audubon Center Senior Coordinator of Conservation and Volunteer Programs\, Bethany Sheffer\, along with Beverly Sullivan\, in a deep dive into how we can leverage our backyards for the betterment of birds. \n•    Fee: $15/adult\, ages 18+\n•    Pre-registration required\n•    Call 860-364-0250 (ext 115) or email Bethany at bethany.sheffer@audubon.org with questions. \n\nAccessibility\n•    Parking details will be emailed to participants closer to the program date.\n•    Terrain is grassy and walking distance will be 100-200 meters.\n•    Restroom available on site. \nRegister here: Homeowner Series: Backyards that Support Birds (5/30/2026) | Sharon Audubon Center

For the first few minutes we will talk about the different wildlife we may see and hear in the preserve\, what owls are native to Colchester\, and facts about Connecticut owls and the threats to their numbers. “Happy owl hour” soft drinks and snacks will be provided by the hike leader\, or BYO.\n \nWe will follow the talk with a moonlit hike through the BHP trails\, using recorded barred owl calls to attract our local resident owls. We have had good luck attracting them and getting answering calls by the end of the hike. This is a relatively quiet hike\, not appropriate for very small children\, not stroller friendly.\n\n\n \nSlow hike\, wooded trail with rocks\, roots\, etc. Red light flashlights will be used by the guides\, so we do not scare off the owls.  Approximate length of hike is about a leisurely mile\, with several stops to call owls.\n \n Details:\n \n\n\nOpen to the public\, Registration required.\n\n\nCLT Members free / Non-members $5 / All kids under 18 years old are free.\n\n\nNon-members can use checkout link on the hike and events page\, or pay cash at the hike.\n\n\nPlease complete one hike waiver per person. A parent or legal guardian must sign one for each child under 18 years old.  (or we will have them at the hike)\n \n\n\nDirections:\n \n\n\nThe preserve is not assigned a street number so for GPS please use the mailbox at 243 Bulkeley Hill Road\, Colchester\, 06415. The preserve lot is directly across from the mailbox. We will meet at the outdoor classroom just inside the main trail past the kiosk signage.\n \n\n\nFrom Rt. 2 to Rt. 16/Middletown Ave\, turn right Bulkeley Hill Road and go about 1.5 miles\, the gravel lot will be on your right.\n \n\n\nPlease note:\n \n\n\nNO dogs for this hike\, please.\n \n\n\nNo headlamps\, please. Cell phone lights and flashlights on a lower mode are best for seeing the trail.\n \n\n\nModerate elevation\, non-groomed dirt trail with rocks and roots.\n \n\n\nPlease dress for the weather and wear appropriate boots or sneakers.\n \n\n\nTick protection is strongly suggested in all seasons. They are tenacious buggers\, literally.\n

SUMMARY:Audubon Shop: Spring Migration Walks
DESCRIPTION:Join Jerry and co. for a small group Spring Migration Bird Walk at Hammonasset\, on of Connecticut’s premier birding “hotspots”. \nHammonasset Beach State Park here in Madison is widely regarded as one of the premier birding spots in CT and springtime migration is a lot of fun.
