DESCRIPTION:May 31\, 2026\nSunday\, 9:00 a.m.\nLocation: Southbury\, CT\n\nRuss Naylor will lead us on a bird walk to the Shepaug Dam to find breeding birds — warblers (Pine\, Prairie\, Blue-winged\, etc.)\, edge and field species (Eastern Towhees\, Field Sparrows\, American Bluebirds)\, plus some special treats: a Cliff Swallow colony\, Spotted Sandpipers\, ravens\, Common Mergansers\, Osprey\, perhaps even a Bald Eagle or two. SUMMARY:Audubon Shop: Spring Migration Walks
DESCRIPTION:Join Jerry and co. for a small group Spring Migration Bird Walk at Hammonasset\, on of Connecticut’s premier birding “hotspots”. \nHammonasset Beach State Park here in Madison is widely regarded as one of the premier birding spots in CT and springtime migration is a lot of fun. Approximately 250 species of birds occur there annually\, as the park boast diverse habitats such as marsh\, open water\, woodland\, grassland\, and shoreline areas. Tropical migrants in their bright breeding finery will be seen as they return north to nesting grounds. We’ll be searching with eyes and ears for shorebirds\, ducks\, birds of prey\, and vibrant songbirds. This is a good chance to learn bird song. \nOur weekend Spring Bird Walks run Saturday April 18 through June 13\, 2026. Always a surprise and always entertaining\, birding on the shore of CT is one of the highlights of spring. Get outdoors and enjoy a Saturday morning in the fresh air! No need to pre-register. Our number one priority is to keep every safe. DESCRIPTION:Sunday\, June 7\, 7:30 am: \nJoin Hartford Audubon and Canton Land Trust leaders Sarah Faulkner and Jay Kaplan for a 1 1/2 hour beginner’s birdwalk for families in this beautiful Canton Land Conservation Trust preserve. You’ll be introduced to birdwatching\, how to use the Merlin app to help with bird identification\, learn to find and identify birds\, and learn about other apps on your phone that can help.  Children ages 6 and older are welcome. We’ll look for birds\, discuss the ecosystems\, and enjoy being in nature. Easy walking\, around 2 miles\, 1.5 hours. Bring binoculars\, smart phone if possible\, sturdy sneakers\, insect repellent\, water and snack. Please leave dogs at home.  Leaders will have some binoculars to loan to participants. Email leader to pre-register for this walk at sffaulkner533@gmail.com. Rain cancels. \nDirections to the Mary Conklin Preserve: From Route 44 in Canton\, turn onto Indian Hill Road and drive about 1.4 miles. The driveway for 144 Indian Hill Road is on the left\, next to a large bright red mailbox. Park in the parking area and we’ll gather by the kiosk.

SUMMARY:Birding for Pleasure: Bird Walk at Frederick White Farm
DESCRIPTION:Count the Bobolinks and More!\n \nJoin Birding for Pleasure in Durham & Middlefield for a bird walk at Frederick White Farm.\n \nFree – Saturday\, June 13\, 2026 at 9:00 AM – about 11:30 AM \n\nMeet at Frederick White Farm open space\,. \n70 Maple Ave\, Durham. Park on side of dirt road down the hill. \nFrederick White Farm is an important habitat for the Bobolink\, a migratory songbird who travels all the way from South America to nest in the grasses at this town-owned farm. During this walk we will observe and count the Bobolink and other grassland species as we explore the farm fields.   \nPeter Picone will lead this walk. He is a Connecticut DEEP Wildlife Division habitat biologist and received the 2025 Tom ODell Outstanding District Service Award from the Connecticut River Coastal Conservation District. The Award recognized Pete’s long standing contributions to the Connecticut Envirothon and for his efforts to enhance habitat for wildlife through outreach and education about native plants and invasive plant management. \nRun completely by volunteers\, Birding for Pleasure’s goal is to engage communities in conversation\, restoration and enjoyment of grasslands focusing on birds\, wildlife and their habitats.  \n\nPlease bring your binoculars\, drinking water\, bug repellent and wear waterproof shoes or boots. The walk around the farm is mostly flat and may be wet. DESCRIPTION:Sunday\, June 14\, 2026\n10:00am – 12:00pm \nJoin us at Deer Pond Farm for a program on Pileated Woodpeckers\, and other forest birds\, sharing the same habitat. Lori Lichtenauer Sanctuary Manager / Naturalist will share unique adaptations of the Pileated Woodpeckers to survive and thrive year-round in the forests of the northeast. You will learn how Pileateds excavate holes in trees for nesting and to find wood boring insects to eat. Pileated woodpeckers are some of the only birds capable of creating large cavities for nesting\, roosting\, and shelter in bad weather for a variety of bird species. Non-migratory birds like tufted titmice\, house wrens\, chickadees and more use old Pileated cavities as their nest sites. Learn about the ways the forest community benefits from the industrious nature of the Pileated. The program will start in our classroom\, then we’ll be on the wooded trails around our main campus birding. All birding levels welcome.
