SUMMARY:Sharon Audubon Center: Homeowner Series: Backyards that Support Birds
DESCRIPTION:Saturday\, May 30th – 10am-12pm \n\nJoin us in this exciting new three-part series where we explore how homeowners can manage their land for the betterment of birds. We’ll be diving into backyards\, fields\, and forests and discussing management opportunities for each of these unique ecosystems. If you own land and have one or more of them on your property\, you won’t want to miss this! Each program will be hosted at a private residence in the Sharon area\, so please look carefully at the address for each. \nOur backyard environments present a growing opportunity for bird habitat as much of their natural habitat is fragmented or altered in some way. Whether we’re striving to eliminate lawn grass\, install native plant gardens\, or swap non-native trees (think Norway Maple) for native ones\, there are numerous opportunities we can seize\, big and small\, that can have a positive impact on our native wildlife and begin to restore our local biodiversity.  Join Sharon Audubon Center Senior Coordinator of Conservation and Volunteer Programs\, Bethany Sheffer\, along with Beverly Sullivan\, in a deep dive into how we can leverage our backyards for the betterment of birds. \n•    Fee: $15/adult\, ages 18+\n•    Pre-registration required\n•    Call 860-364-0250 (ext 115) or email Bethany at bethany.sheffer@audubon.org with questions. \n\nAccessibility\n•    Parking details will be emailed to participants closer to the program date.\n•    Terrain is grassy and walking distance will be 100-200 meters.\n•    Restroom available on site. \nRegister here: Homeowner Series: Backyards that Support Birds (5/30/2026) | Sharon Audubon Center

SUMMARY:CT Audubon\, Deer Pond Farm: Pileated Woodpeckers & Forest Birds (class/walk)
DESCRIPTION:Sunday\, June 14\, 2026\n10:00am – 12:00pm  \nJoin us at Deer Pond Farm for a program on Pileated Woodpeckers\, and other forest birds\, sharing the same habitat. Lori Lichtenauer Sanctuary Manager / Naturalist will share unique adaptations of the Pileated Woodpeckers to survive and thrive year-round in the forests of the northeast. You will learn how Pileateds excavate holes in trees for nesting and to find wood boring insects to eat. Pileated woodpeckers are some of the only birds capable of creating large cavities for nesting\, roosting\, and shelter in bad weather for a variety of bird species. Non-migratory birds like tufted titmice\, house wrens\, chickadees and more use old Pileated cavities as their nest sites. Learn about the ways the forest community benefits from the industrious nature of the Pileated. The program will start in our classroom\, then we’ll be on the wooded trails around our main campus birding. All birding levels welcome. Recommended for ages 10 and up. \nRegistration required.$5 members; $10 non-members \nRegister here: Pileated Woodpeckers & Forest Birds (class / walk) – The Connecticut Audubon Society
