DESCRIPTION:One of our favorite signs of spring at the Greenwich Audubon Center is the amazing aerial mating display of the American Woodcock! These woodland relatives of our sandpipers and shorebirds are truly spectacular acrobats who put on a mesmerizing performance against the twilight sky. Join us for a special evening program to look for these secretive shorebird relatives while looking and listening for other signs of spring from our Hawk Watch Lawn. \nIN THE EVENT OF INCLEMENT WEATHER FOR EITHER EVENING’S PROGRAM TICKETS WILL BE VALID FOR THE EVENING OF FAVORABLE WEATHER (March 13 & 20). IF BOTH DAYS HAVE INCLEMENT WEATHER OR LACK OF BIRDS DATES WILL BE MOVED TO FRIDAY MARCH 27 \nThere will be no ticket sales at the door the night of the program. SUMMARY:Menunkatuck Audubon: Visiting Argentina's Pampas and Atlantic Forest
DESCRIPTION:Last November\, John Hannan traveled over 2\,500 miles through Argentina’s grasslands and Atlantic Forest\, visiting five key conservation projects managed by Aves Argentinas. These projects protect thousands of acres of grasslands and forest habitat for hundreds of species\, including the endangered Pampas Meadowlark\, Saffron-cowled Blackbird\, Yellow Cardinal\, Blue-winged Macaw\, and many others. Along the way\, he observed more than 300 bird and other wildlife species. \nThrough images of stunning birds and landscapes\, John will share an inspiring story of conservation efforts that bring together scientists\, ranchers\, and conservationists. Together\, they work to protect some of the world’s most unique habitats while supporting local communities with sustainable livelihoods. \nJohn Hannan is a 40-year veteran of the non-profit world\, most of it in the conservation sphere. He has been a part of the Audubon family at all levels. On staff at National John Hannan has 40 years of experience in the non-profit sector\, mainly in conservation. He has been involved with the Audubon organization at all levels. While on staff at National Audubon\, he helped launch the Americas Flyways’ Strategy fundraising efforts and was part of the team that planned the Atlantic Flyway Shorebird Conservation Business Plan. In New York\, he is a former Chair of the Audubon NY State Chapters’ Council and has served as President of the Bedford Audubon Board of Directors\, both in the past and currently. \nAt Audubon\, he helped launch the Americas Flyways’ Strategy fundraising efforts and was part of the planning team for the Atlantic Flyway Shorebird Conservation Business Plan. In NY\, he is a past Chair of the Audubon NY State Chapters’ Council and a past and current President of the Bedford Audubon Board of Directors. \nFrom 2017 to 2024\, he worked with BirdLife International\, raising awareness and support for the Partnership’s coordinated global conservation efforts. Each program will focus on the seasonal needs of birds and specific ways to support them\, using examples from the sanctuary grounds of the RTP Estuary Center in Old Lyme. SUMMARY:CT Audubon - Deer Pond: Pileated Woodpeckers & Forest Birds (class/walk)
DESCRIPTION:Sunday\, June 14\, 2026\n10:00am – 12:00pm \nJoin us at Deer Pond Farm for a program on Pileated Woodpeckers\, and other forest birds\, sharing the same habitat. Lori Lichtenauer Sanctuary Manager / Naturalist will share unique adaptations of the Pileated Woodpeckers to survive and thrive year-round in the forests of the northeast. You will learn how Pileateds excavate holes in trees for nesting and to find wood boring insects to eat. Pileated woodpeckers are some of the only birds capable of creating large cavities for nesting\, roosting\, and shelter in bad weather for a variety of bird species. Non-migratory birds like tufted titmice\, house wrens\, chickadees and more use old Pileated cavities as their nest sites. Learn about the ways the forest community benefits from the industrious nature of the Pileated. The program will start in our classroom\, then we’ll be on the wooded trails around our main campus birding. All birding levels welcome.
