The properties include a variety of habitats including wetland\, field\, upland deciduous and hemlock forest sections with rocky ledges\, and streams. Expect some steep and rocky areas with rough terrain and uneven and wet footing. Wear appropriate footwear and tick-proof clothing. Bring water. DESCRIPTION:Count the Bobolinks and More!  Enjoy Durham’s hidden gem. \nWednesday July 15 \, 2026  \nTime: 8:30 AM – est. 11AM  \nLocation: Frederick White Farm open space \n70 Maple Ave\, Durham.  \nPark on side of dirt road down the hill. \nJoin Birding for Pleasure in Durham & Middlefield for a bird walk at Frederick White Farm – an important habitat for Bobolinks. The Bobolink is a migratory songbird who travels all the way from South America to nest in the grasses at this town-owned farm. During this walk we will observe and count the Bobolink and other grassland species as we explore the importance of habitats in relationship to wildlife. \nElena Coffey will lead the walk. She is a Birding for Pleasure volunteer and specializes with birding-by-sound. She is on the executive board of Mattabeseck Audubon Society\, a member of the New Haven Bird Club and the Connecticut Ornithological Society. When she was in her twenties\, Elena saw a tree full of colorful migrating warblers and she was hooked on birding! Elena will help build your birding skills by recognizing bird sounds while learning about the musical Bobolink. \n** Youth must be accompanied by parent or responsible adult.** \nRun completely by volunteers\, Birding for Pleasure’s goal is to engage communities in conversation\, restoration and enjoyment of nature focusing on grasslands birds\, other wildlife and their habitats.  \n\nPlease bring your binoculars\, drinking water\, bug repellent and wear waterproof shoes or boots. The walk around the farm is mostly flat and may be muddy.\nNo dogs. \n\nVortex binoculars are available through a CVEF grant for check-out at the Durham and Middlefield Public Libraries during their regular business hours.  \nA few binoculars may be borrowed during our walk. \n** Registration is optional except for students/youth to help with our planning. https://durhamlibrary.libcal.com/event/17097385?hs=a  \n* Heavy rain or lightening cancels.  \n \n  \nBirding For Pleasure’s next walk is Saturday July 18\, 2026 at 8 a.m. led by Melissa Baston with the Quinnipiac Valley Audubon Society.

SUMMARY:New Haven Bird Club: People's State Forest Field Trip
DESCRIPTION:Field Trip – Peoples State Forest\, Barkhamsted – Paul Mahler and Michele McDermott \n\nJuly 19\, 2026 @ 7:30 am – 11:30 am\n \n\n\n\nPeoples State Forest spans over 3\,000 acres of diverse habitats and features 14 miles of trails\, yet it has been infrequently birded over the years. Join us as we explore various hotspots within the forest. Species we’re likely to encounter include: Blackburnian\, Canada\, Black-throated Blue\, and Black-throated Green Warblers\, Northern Waterthrush\, Ovenbirds\, Red-breasted Nuthatches\, Scarlet Tanagers\, Least and Alder Flycatchers\, Winter Wrens\, and more. Great Horned and Barred Owls and Broad-winged Hawks also nest within the forest. Please note: the forest can be quite buggy in summer. Mosquito nets and/or generous use of bug spray are highly recommended. We will drive to several locations and walk approximately 2–3 miles throughout the morning. Terrain will include boardwalks\, rocky access roads\, and forest trails with many stumps and roots — please plan footwear and mobility accordingly.\n \nUpdate 5/14/26: New Starting Location! We will meet at the parking lot for Church Pool Park and then carpool over to the entrance for Peoples State Forest.\n \nChurch Pool Park is located at: 10 Pleasant Valley Rd\, Barkhamsted\, CT 06063 (41.9133759\, -72.9864183)\n \nMost people will likely be taking Rt 44 to either Rt 318 or Rt 181.\n \nFrom Rt 318: Follow Rt 318 until you cross over an old iron bridge.
