SUMMARY:New Haven Bird Club: Field Trip - West Rock Ridge State Park
DESCRIPTION:Field Trip – West Rock Ridge State Park – Lake Wintergreen\, Hamden – Molly Zahn and Peter Grund\n\nApril 12 @ 7:30 am – 10:30 am\n\n\n\nJoin Molly Zahn and Peter Grund for a walk at the Lake Wintergreen area of West Rock Ridge State Park. We will circle the lake and\, if there is time\, walk up to the water tower close to the top of the ridge. The walk around the lake is on gravel or dirt paths and is mostly flat. The walk to the ridge is uphill. We hope to see a broad range of woodland birds\, as well as some waterfowl on and around the lake. Possible birds are (among others) Golden-crowned Kinglet\, Purple Finch\, Pine Warbler\, Bald Eagle\, and Ring-necked Duck\, as well as early migrants such as Eastern Phoebe\, Eastern Towhee\, and perhaps Brown Thrasher\, Louisiana Waterthrush\, and Palm Warbler. \nMeet at the Lake Wintergreen parking lot off Main Street\, Hamden. \nLeaders: Molly Zahn\, 785-383 8695 or mollymzahn@gmail.com; Peter Grund\,  785-727-3962 or petergrund93@yahoo.com \n \n\n\n

SUMMARY:New Haven Bird Club: Field Trip - Geology and Birds\, Branford
DESCRIPTION:Field Trip – Geology and Birds\, Branford – Cheryl Cape and Dan May \n\nApril 18 @ 8:00 am – 12:00 pm\n\n\n\nRain date: Sunday\, April 19\, 2026 \nJoin a field trip that explores natural resources and birds in two rock areas in rural Branford and suburban New Haven. The trip starts at the Kelley Memorial Preserve in Branford\, which surrounds the active Stony Creek quarry. Stony Creek granite is a building stone mined here since the late 19th century. We hike a moderately strenuous loop of 1.5 miles\, observing the geological features and the birds in woodland and riparian settings. An optional (and shorter) second part of the trip\, after a rest stop on I-95\, will be at Quarry Park Preserve in Fair Haven Heights. This small\, wooded preserve in sandstone bedrock was quarried from the 1700s to the early 1900s. \nMeet at the Kelley Memorial Preserve parking lot\, 103-127 Quarry Road\, Branford. \nLeaders: Cheryl Cape and Dan May\, 203-343-4490 or capect13@gmail.com \n \n\n\n
