SUMMARY:Hartford Audubon Society: Big January - All month
DESCRIPTION:Big January All MonthAll of Hartford County\n \n\n\nIt’s that time of year!  The Hartford Audubon Society (HAS) is pleased to announce our ninth annual Hartford County Big January of Birding birdwatching challenge. The goal of the activity is to encourage folks to get outside during the month of January and see as many species of wild birds in Hartford County as possible. The challenge is free to people of all ages and is not intended to be competitive — please share your findings and encourage new birders.\n\n And this year\, the CT Ornithological Association is running an all-CT Big January\, so you can do both ours in Hartford County AND the statewide challenge too!\n\nTo participate in both challenges\, birders should enter their daily or periodic observations into ebird.org\, the free birdwatching site maintained by the Cornell University Lab of Ornithology.  If you don’t use eBird\, you can list your species\, date seen\, location\, and brief description\, and send it via email or mail directly to me right at the end of January. It must be received by Wednesday\, February 4th.  You do not need to be a HAS member or reside in Hartford County to enter. At the end of the month\, Hartford Audubon will retrieve all the data and award certificates and prizes. There are four categories:\n\nYouth (ages 4-10) who must see at least 25 species to enter\nTeen (ages 11-17) who must see at least 35 species to enter\nWeekend Warrior (adults ages 18 and up who can’t get outdoors during the week) who must see at least 50 species to enter\nAdults (ages 18 and up who can get outdoors during the week) who must see at least 60 species to enter.\n\nAll entries that meet the minimum number of species for each challenge group will receive a certificate of achievement.  A special prize will be awarded for the highest species count for each challenge group\, and the coveted “Golden Grebe” award will be given to the birder finding the most unusual bird.\n\nJanuary\, 2026 may be a very interesting month and a joyful way to enter the new year. He has a Master’s Degree in biology and studied under famed ornithologist Dr. Noble Proctor.  Chris is retired after a career as a state government executive\, a land conservation and management planner with The Nature Conservancy\, a municipal planner\, and a private land use consultant.  He is a past president of the Connecticut Ornithological Association\, a founding member of the Western Connecticut Bird Club\, and he served as chair of the first Connecticut Breeding Bird Atlas steering committee.  Chris now spends much of his time photographing birds and nature\, traveling to the neotropics and southwest US to see and photograph as many different hummingbirds as possible\, and helping maintain their yard and gardens in Woodbury Connecticut.  Chris’s photography can be sampled here: CSWood PhotoSampler\n\n\n\nDescription:  The natural phenomenon of bird migration is easily observed and studied in Connecticut due to the state’s location\, geography\, and habitat diversity.  Wood will present an overview of bird migration\, with particular consideration of where Connecticut fits into the big picture of bird conservation and the enjoyment of the hobby of birding.  With a state list of over 450 birds\, many of which are migrants through the state\, Connecticut birders have the opportunity to see well over one quarter of all the bird species found in the United States.  Sustaining necessary habitats for breeding birds and migrants in our highly developed state is an important goal for land conservation efforts and this presentation discusses efforts and strategies to attain that goal.\n\nFree and open to the public.\n\nContact:  Angela Dimmitt – angeladimmitt@aol.com

DESCRIPTION:Date:  Monday\, February 2\, 2026\n \nWhat:  Litchfield Hills Audubon Society Monthly Meeting\n \nWhen:  6:45 to 8:30 PM\n \nWhere:  Litchfield Community Center\, 421 Bantam Rd (Rte 202)\, Litchfield\, CT 06759\n \nTitle:  The Northern Saw-whet Owl\n \nWho:  Larry Fischer\, past President of the Western Connecticut Bird Club\n \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n Description: This is the smallest forest owl (roughly half the size of a screech owl) in eastern North America. In the Fall\, thousands leave their northern breeding grounds in southern Canada and the northern United States and move south to find food and cover. Often called a migrant\, it is more appropriate to refer to them as a “nomad” or a fall “passage bird\,” since they never end up in the same place twice. Despite the fact that they have been studied extensively\, much of their life history remains a mystery.  Former WCBC President and Federally licensed raptor bander\, Larry Fischer will unravel some of the mystery surrounding the life history of the Northern Saw-whet Owl\, drawing from his extensive experience with this small owl\, illustrated with his amazing photographs of the birds in all ages.\n \nLarry has been banding and watching hawks and owls for more than 40 years.  He is a State and Federally licensed bird bander with an emphasis on birds of prey.  He is currently the Connecticut collaborator on broad-winged hawk research with Hawk Mountain Sanctuary Association in Kempton\, PA\, and also serves as a member of the Board of Directors of the NorthEast Hawk Watch.\n\n\nFree and open to the public.\n \nContact:  Angela Dimmitt – 860-355-3429

DESCRIPTION:Join Audubon Naturalists as we count waterbirds and land birds in Greenwich Harbor as part of the Cornell Lab of Ornithology’s annual Great Backyard Bird Count. Ducks\, geese\, loons\, and gulls are some of the birds that we expect to see as they spend the winter on Long Island Sound. You will also get to help submit our findings to the bird count website and learn how you can submit your backyard counts too! \nThis IN-PERSON program has a limited capacity of 30 participants and will be held entirely outdoors. \nRestrooms will not be available so please plan accordingly. \nTickets MUST be purchased in advance through our online ticket sales page. There will be no ticket sales at the door the day of the program. He has a Master’s Degree in biology and studied under famed ornithologist Dr. Noble Proctor.  Chris is retired after a career as a state government executive\, a land conservation and management planner with The Nature Conservancy\, a municipal planner\, and a private land use consultant.  He is a past president of the Connecticut Ornithological Association\, a founding member of the Western Connecticut Bird Club\, and he served as chair of the first Connecticut Breeding Bird Atlas steering committee.  Chris now spends much of his time photographing birds and nature\, traveling to the neotropics and southwest US to see and photograph as many different hummingbirds as possible\, and helping maintain their yard and gardens in Woodbury Connecticut.  Chris’s photography can be sampled here: CSWood PhotoSampler\n \n\n\nDescription:  The natural phenomenon of bird migration is easily observed and studied in Connecticut due to the state’s location\, geography\, and habitat diversity.  Wood will present an overview of bird migration\, with particular consideration of where Connecticut fits into the big picture of bird conservation and the enjoyment of the hobby of birding.  With a state list of over 450 birds\, many of which are migrants through the state\, Connecticut birders have the opportunity to see well over one quarter of all the bird species found in the United States.  Sustaining necessary habitats for breeding birds and migrants in our highly developed state is an important goal for land conservation efforts and this presentation discusses efforts and strategies to attain that goal.\n \nFree and open to the public.\n \n\n\nTo request the link\, please contact Chris Wood at cwood022@gmail.com.\n\n\n \n\n\n\n \n\n\n\n \n\n\n\n

His youthful enthusiasm for birds and nature as a whole is contagious on the tours he leads for Sunrise Birding. An accomplished photographer\, Nick is always willing to share tips and tricks in the field. He currently sits on the Avian Records Committee of Connecticut and maintains a long-running blog about his birding adventures. Nick holds an undergraduate degree from Stonehill College and a graduate degree from Yale University; he practices in Orthopedic Surgery as a Physician Associate in the United States\n \nDescription:  Join Nick as he gives an introduction to all things Connecticut Shorebirds. We will learn what exactly a “shorebird” is\, and how to tell the various types apart from one another. We will discuss the incredible life cycles of these birds\, including their daunting migrations.
