We meet at 7:30 a.m. at the old train station in Kent\,\n3 Railroad Avenue\, and will carpool to the site\, as parking there is\nextremely limited.\nField Trip – River Road\, Kent – Travels Along a Riparian Woodland Corridor – Allan Welby\n\nMay 10\, 2026 @ 7:30 am – 1:00 pm\n\n\n\nRiver Road in Kent along the Housatonic River provides a major north-south riparian corridor for spring migration. River Road has produced a nice variety of Northwestern Connecticut nesting species including Acadian and Least Flycatchers; Yellow-throated and Blue-headed Vireos; Winter Wren; and Cerulean\, Golden-winged\, and Worm-eating Warblers. The vast uninterrupted forest rising from the river is an ideal location for a moderate to strenuous walk on beautiful terrain. \nMeet in Kent at the old train station\, 3 Railroad Avenue\, just north of the intersection of Routes 7 & 341. The trip starts at the Kelley Memorial Preserve in Branford\, which surrounds the active Stony Creek quarry. Stony Creek granite is a building stone mined here since the late 19th century. We hike a moderately strenuous loop of 1.5 miles\, observing the geological features and the birds in woodland and riparian settings. An optional (and shorter) second part of the trip\, after a rest stop on I-95\, will be at Quarry Park Preserve in Fair Haven Heights.
