The expansive lawns\, sandy flats\, and rocky islands attract a variety of species\, while the river and sound are home to gulls and waterfowl. \nThe walk will be approximately .5-.75 miles on level grassy\, paved\, and dirt terrain. Exposure to sun\, heat/cold\, and wind possible depending on weather. DESCRIPTION:~ SEPTEMBER MEETING – Thursday 17\n– Audubon Bent of the River Sanctuary\n185 East Flat Hill Road\, Southbury\, CT 06488 – up in the barn.\n\n\nPark at the barn or in the parking lot above.\n\n6:30 refreshments\, meeting starts at 7:00\, ends 8:45 at the latest.\n\n\nSpeaker: FRAN ZYGMONT – “THE WONDERS OF BIRD MIGRATION”\n\n\nFran Zygmont \, a longtime local and avid birder\, will tell of travels of migratory birds to\nand from their wintering grounds.\nWhy do birds migrate? Where do they go?\nFran will answer these questions as well as explain how weather plays a part in migration and\ncover some amazing facts and myths about bird migration you won’t believe.\nHe’ll also provide tools you can use to track migration along with best times to look for migrants.\nFran is a longtime birding enthusiast and has extensive knowledge of birds in\nConnecticut (particularly the northwest) with focused interest on migration\, owls and\nbirdsong. He has led many bird walks and trips over the past 30 years and continues\nwith a focus on education and enjoyment of birds.\n\nHe is a Master Bird call imitator – can imitate songs and calls of 40+ common and uncommon birds in the region.\nZygmont is a Past President\, Vice President and Board Member of Litchfield Hills\nAudubon and Aton Forest Inc Board Member (2015-2024).\nHe has participated in many bird censuses and competitions including the New Jersey World Series of Birding\,\nand\, currently holds the Connecticut State Big Day birding record (with a team known\nas the ‘Raven Lunatics’) with 193 species in a 24-hour period.
