SUMMARY:New Haven Birding Club: Chippens Hill Field Trip
DESCRIPTION:Field Trip – Chippens Hill Grassland Birds – Jack Swatt\n\nMay 31\, 2026 @ 7:00 am – 10:00 am\n\n\n\nThe Chippens Hill area of Bristol has historically been farmland. The Environmental Learning Centers of Connecticut and the city of Bristol are working to save some of the habitat where Bobolinks\, Meadowlarks\, and Grasshopper Sparrows have been found. Join Jack Swatt for a tour of these areas in search of these declining species. Bring plenty of water and be prepared to walk in sunny field habitat that may contain ticks. \nMeet at the Bristol Dog Park parking lot at 400 Perkins Street in Bristol\, just north of the intersection with Pinehurst Road. \nLeader: Jack Swatt\, 203-592-4686 or jswattbirds@gmail.com

SUMMARY:Litchfield Audubon: Picnic and Birding at Shepaug Dam
DESCRIPTION:May 31\, 2026\nSunday\, 9:00 a.m.\nLocation: Southbury\, CT\n \nRuss Naylor will lead us on a bird walk to the Shepaug Dam to find breeding birds — warblers (Pine\, Prairie\, Blue-winged\, etc.)\, edge and field species (Eastern Towhees\, Field Sparrows\, American Bluebirds)\, plus some special treats: a Cliff Swallow colony\, Spotted Sandpipers\, ravens\, Common Mergansers\, Osprey\, perhaps even a Bald Eagle or two. Some of these birds will be nesting\, and we’re apt to be serenaded by Orchard Orioles and Warbling Vireos.\n \nAfter our walk\, we’ll enjoy an informal picnic (bring your lunch and beverage) and swap bird or outdoor tales in the late-spring warmth (we hope!).\n \nMeet at 7:30 outside the Canfield Corner Pharmacy at the junction of Route 6 (Main Street North) and Route 47 in Woodbury.\n \nFor more information\, call Russ Naylor at 203-841-7779; leave a message for a return call.

SUMMARY:Colchester Land Trust: Owl Prowl
DESCRIPTION:COLCHESTER LAND TRUST:  OWL PROWL\n\n\n\n\n\n\nMay 31\, 2026\, 7:30 PM – 9:00 PM\n \nBulkeley Hill Preserve\, Buckeley Hill Rd\, Colchester\, CT 06415\, USA\n\n\n\n\nAbout the event – Join your host\, Liza Sivek\, for an Owl Prowl under the rare Blue Moon at Bulkeley Hill Preserve\, Colchester!\n\n\n\n \nMeet at the Bulkeley Hill Preserve outdoor classroom at s7:30 pm. For the first few minutes we will talk about the different wildlife we may see and hear in the preserve\, what owls are native to Colchester\, and facts about Connecticut owls and the threats to their numbers. “Happy owl hour” soft drinks and snacks will be provided by the hike leader\, or BYO.\n \nWe will follow the talk with a moonlit hike through the BHP trails\, using recorded barred owl calls to attract our local resident owls. We have had good luck attracting them and getting answering calls by the end of the hike. This is a relatively quiet hike\, not appropriate for very small children\, not stroller friendly.\n\n\n \nSlow hike\, wooded trail with rocks\, roots\, etc. Red light flashlights will be used by the guides\, so we do not scare off the owls.  Approximate length of hike is about a leisurely mile\, with several stops to call owls.\n \n Details:\n \n\n\nOpen to the public\, Registration required.\n\n\nCLT Members free / Non-members $5 / All kids under 18 years old are free.\n\n\nNon-members can use checkout link on the hike and events page\, or pay cash at the hike.\n\n\nPlease complete one hike waiver per person. A parent or legal guardian must sign one for each child under 18 years old.  (or we will have them at the hike)\n \n\n\nDirections:\n \n\n\nThe preserve is not assigned a street number so for GPS please use the mailbox at 243 Bulkeley Hill Road\, Colchester\, 06415. The preserve lot is directly across from the mailbox. We will meet at the outdoor classroom just inside the main trail past the kiosk signage.\n \n\n\nFrom Rt. 2 to Rt. 16/Middletown Ave\, turn right Bulkeley Hill Road and go about 1.5 miles\, the gravel lot will be on your right.\n \n\n\nPlease note:\n \n\n\nNO dogs for this hike\, please.\n \n\n\nNo headlamps\, please. Cell phone lights and flashlights on a lower mode are best for seeing the trail.\n \n\n\nModerate elevation\, non-groomed dirt trail with rocks and roots.\n \n\n\nPlease dress for the weather and wear appropriate boots or sneakers.\n \n\n\nTick protection is strongly suggested in all seasons. They are tenacious buggers\, literally.\n
