SUMMARY:Audubon Shop: Spring Migration Walks
DESCRIPTION:Join Jerry and co. for a small group Spring Migration Bird Walk at Hammonasset\, on of Connecticut’s premier birding “hotspots”. \nHammonasset Beach State Park here in Madison is widely regarded as one of the premier birding spots in CT and springtime migration is a lot of fun. Approximately 250 species of birds occur there annually\, as the park boast diverse habitats such as marsh\, open water\, woodland\, grassland\, and shoreline areas. Tropical migrants in their bright breeding finery will be seen as they return north to nesting grounds. We’ll be searching with eyes and ears for shorebirds\, ducks\, birds of prey\, and vibrant songbirds. This is a good chance to learn bird song. \nOur weekend Spring Bird Walks run Saturday April 18 through June 13\, 2026. Always a surprise and always entertaining\, birding on the shore of CT is one of the highlights of spring. Get outdoors and enjoy a Saturday morning in the fresh air! No need to pre-register. Our number one priority is to keep every safe. The Coastal Center is a hub for wildlife all times of the year\, so we’ll take you to some of our favorite sites around the sanctuary’s salt marsh\, woodlands\, and sandbar to look for a variety of birds. Beginner birders are welcome. The Coastal Center has a limited supply of binoculars to loan out if needed. \nThis will be a casual walk for 2-3 hours\, depending on the weather and birding conditions. The walk is fairly flat\, but will take place on loose sand with little shade. Please bring good walking shoes\, binoculars\, and water. Dress appropriately for the weather\, as it tends to be windy at the coast. There are bathrooms on site at the Coastal Center. \nThis walk is subject to cancellation in the event of bad weather. DESCRIPTION:Saturday\, May 23rd – 10am-12pm\n\n\nIf you’ve ever seen a kestrel\, you know they’re diminutive raptors that pack a punch! If you haven’t seen one before\, this is a program you won’t want to miss. Sharon Audubon Center staff will be introducing you to its role in the region’s Kestrel Nest Box Program to increase local kestrel populations in our area before taking you outdoors to visit a nest box on the Sharon Land Trust’s Twin Oaks property. Participants will learn about Kestrel natural history\, conservation status and opportunities\, and hopefully get to see them in the wild at the nest-box site!\n \nThis program will begin at the Sharon Audubon Center and end at the Twin Oaks property. DESCRIPTION:ECO TRAVEL:\nEagle/Osprey Boats – Saturdays May 16 and 23 5 – 8 pm\n\nConnecticut Audubon Society EcoTravel will again offer boat cruises to search for Bald Eagle\, Osprey\, and other bird species migrating and nesting along the Connecticut River. Bald Eagle can be found along the lower river\, a habitat that hosts a transient winter population as well as nesting residents. Naturalists are on board the vessel to share information about the Connecticut River\, the birdlife\, and natural history.\n \nThe vessel has a heated cabin\, restrooms\, and three decks for optimal viewing. Tours are approximately three hours in length and depart from The Essex Steam Train in Essex. Train ride is included in the cost of the trip. Appropriate for children eight years old and over.
