Avian Hybrids and Subspecies Occurring in Connecticut:

A Discussion on Taxonomy and Birding

Birdcraft Sanctuary – Connecticut Audubon Society || 314 Unquowa Road, Fairfield, CT

Saturday, November 22, 10am – 12:30pm

The COA Workshop Committee invites you to join us for an Advanced Level Workshop on the topic of “Avian Hybrids and Subspecies Occurring in Connecticut: A Discussion on Taxonomy and Birding”. The Workshop will be led by two of our local birders, Nick Bonomo and Aidan Kiley. If you’ve wondered about things like the finer field marks that denote the difference between a Cory’s Shearwater (Calonectris borealis) and the recently split Scopoli’s Shearwater (Calonectris diomedea), the many Red-tailed Hawk subspecies, or why some hybrids are more common than others, this is the workshop for you. Our two presenters will be giving insight into species such as the Blue-winged x Golden-winged Warbler (Brewster’s and Lawrence’s), Gull hybrids, Short-billed Dowitcher, Willet, and more.

This workshop will be geared towards intermediate to expert birders and ornithologists, but is open to anyone who would like to further their knowledge about the avian world!

If you have any questions, please reach out to us by emailing workshops@ctbirding.org

Nick Bonomo

A birder since the age of 13, Nick was born and raised in Connecticut, USA and has spent a large part of his free time traveling the globe in search of birds. His youthful enthusiasm for birds and nature as a whole is contagious on the tours he leads. An accomplished photographer, Nick is always willing to share tips and tricks in the field. He currently sits on the Avian Records Committee of Connecticut and maintains a long-running blog about his birding adventures. Nick holds an undergraduate degree from Stonehill College and a graduate degree from Yale University; he practices in Orthopedic Surgery as a Physician Associate in the United States.

Aidan Kiley

Aidan began birding at the age of 12 after being inspired by his mom. His primary interests are subspecies, gulls, hybrids, and difficult species complexes such as the empidonax flycatchers. You can find him at his local patches in his hometown of Fairfield or obsessing over his Fairfield County list. He serves on the Avian Records Committee of Connecticut, acts as a statewide eBird Reviewer for Connecticut, and is a moderator for the Connecticut RBA. He holds a bachelors degree in Philosophy from Fairfield University.
