New Haven Bird Club: Meeting – Hawk Watch at 55

December 11, 2025 @ 7:00 pm - 9:00 pm

Indoor Meeting – Hawk Watch at 55: A Legacy of Raptor Migration Monitoring at Lighthouse Point – Steve Mayo

December 11 @ 7:00 pm – 9:00 pm

Whitney Center, Cultural Arts Center, Hamden 200 Leeder Hill Drive, Hamden, CT.

In 1970, Neil Currie began counting migrating raptors at Lighthouse Point Park, launching what would become one of New England’s longest-running hawk watches. Join Steve Mayo, NHBC’s Hawk Watch leader for a look back at 55 years of migration monitoring at this storied New Haven site. The talk will explore long-term trends in raptor populations, stories from the field, and the contributions of the many dedicated volunteers who’ve kept watch over the skies. Whether you’re a hawk watch regular or have never visited the site, this program offers a unique window into the history and value of this remarkable NHBC tradition.
