COA Hawk Watch: Quaker Ridge

October is prime time for honing your raptor identification skills, so COA is offering special raptor events for our members.
COA now has a Hawk ID video presentation by Ryan MacLean available for watching on demand on the Members Only page at ctbirding.org. You must be a current COA member and sign in to your COA account to access the page.We have also arranged two special COA member mornings of hawkwatching in the field at Connectiicut’s premier raptor sites, no registration required.
October 8, 9 am -12 pm, Quaker Ridge Hawk Watch
Quaker Ridge Hawk Watch is located on the easily accessible front lawn of Greenwich Audubon Center at the corner of Riversville Road and John Street in Greenwich, CT. Best known for its amazing early season Broad-Winged Hawk flights, Quaker Ridge sees the greatest diversity of raptors migrate over the ridges throughout October. Experienced hawkwatchers will be on hand on the morning of October 8 to point out migrating hawks and help with field identification. Limited seating is available or bring your own chair, and don’t forget the binoculars.
October 9, 8 am – 12 pm, Lighthouse Point Park Hawk Watch
Lighthouse Point Hawk Watch is a coastal site located in Lighthouse Point Park, New Haven. If the gate is staffed, just let them know you are there for the Hawk Watch and proceed to the tall stand alone tree on top of the hill. Hawkwatcher extraordinaire Steve Mayo has piloted the Hawk Watch station at Lighthouse Point for a long time and is responsible for compiling an annual COA Hawk report for The Connecticut Warbler. Come watch the master at work and maybe help spot a Golden Eagle or even more rare migrating raptor. No registration required, just show up at the Hawk Watch station on Sunday morning, October 9, starting at 8 am.
